After delivery: take care of your perineum

The perineum is often ignored before pregnancy. After'deliverythere is only one left for him. And for good reason, this set of muscles that surrounds the genital and urinary organs of women, is strongly solicited during these nine months. Only after the birth baby, his tissues are released and it is important that they regain their tone. At risk otherwise of suffering from urinary incontinence.

If some women experience small leaks during a sneeze or after an effort, some will have these symptoms only several years later, hence the need to act even prevention.

The purpose of the re-education of the perineum is to make the pain disappear and to give it back strength. Only midwives and physiotherapists specialized in uro-gynecological rehabilitation are able to make you work these muscles properly.

In practice, there are several methods. The first is manually fingered by the physiotherapist who exerts a slight pressure on the perineum. The mum must contract the latter to resist the tension. The second consists of a series of electrostimulation sessions via a vaginal probe. The third is the biofeedback technique. It lies in the placement of a probe in the vagina. With each contraction, the probe connected to a machine emits a noise or a light, allowing the mum to become aware of his contraction.

The patient must then continue to practice at home, using what she has learned with the professional. It is sometimes advisable not to start rehabilitation before six weeks. However, it is not. Indeed, well practiced, the perineal reeducation can begin as of the 4th week which follows thedelivery. Provided of course that the exercises are done smoothly and always by a good professional.

What is the difference with postnatal rehabilitation?

Postnatal rehabilitation is a kind of two in one and includes re-education of the perineum and abdominals. This program specially designed to help the mum regaining shape includes exercises to stimulate the perineum and others to help the abdominal strap regain its tone.

In theory, every young woman who has given birth must leave the maternity ward with a prescription, prescribing post-natal re-education. But that is far from always the case. If you do not have one, you can ask the health professionals at your clinic. Otherwise, during the postnatal visit, six to eight weeks after birthyour gynecologist will recommend that you do a few sessions if necessary.

What about abs?

Abdominal rehabilitation closely follows that of the perineum and is part of postnatal rehabilitation. The exercises also practiced by the physiotherapist aim at strengthening the abdominal strap and the back muscles hurt during pregnancy. Here again, the patient must reproduce certain exercises at home so as to benefit durably from the effects of rehabilitation. Thus, after a few weeks, the abdominals are toned and the belly becomes flat again.
