How to prevent the dangers of the pool for a child

Before three years, your child does not have the reflex to raise the head if it plunges into the water and no noise can alert parents that a drama is played. Which means that a few centimeters of water and a few seconds are enough for the fatal accident to occur. The health of your child can be seriously endangered: falling into a swimming pool can lead to paralysis for example.

The unsteady approach little ones and their curiosity for the beautiful, shiny surface of the water make swimming pools a danger to the safety of children. They just have to fall or they want to come near ... and they can step over the edge.

A barrier of at least one meter in height creates an impassable obstacle for children up to about 6 years old. Since January 2004, it is mandatory in France to equip private pools totally or partially buried with safety devices.

Never leave a water tank, wading pool or inflatable pool unattended. Sometimes a simple filled basin is unfortunately enough for the little ones to drown.

Do not allow your child to swim outside of your presence. Even in a swimming pool supervised by a lifeguard, this one can look on the other side at the wrong time.

Make the edges of the pools non-slip and remove ladders and access stairs from above-ground pools outside swimming time, where an adult is present.

Remove the toys from the pool once your children are out so that they are not tempted to catch them.

As long as he can not swim, have your child wear armbands and float suits.

Our advice
Explain the dangers to the children, repeat, again and again, that you should not run around the pool, that you have to wait for an adult to watch for a swim. But never think that this warning is enough: stay alert constantly.
