Infant mortality drops by 27%

In its annual report entitled "World Health Statistics", WHO, the World Health Organization, has seen a drop in child mortality of 27% since 1990. For the second year in a row, it remains below the symbolic threshold 10 million.
In 2007, 9 million children under the age of five died, compared to 12.5 million in 1990. This encouraging figure is a reflection of efforts in developing countries. Distributions of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (27 countries recorded a 50% decrease in deaths from malaria), oral rehydration for diarrhea, sanitation or development of water supply, helped to reduce infant mortality . "Pneumonia and diarrhea continue to kill 3.8 million children under the age of five," says the WHO report. According to him, "the least progressing countries are usually those with high levels of HIV / AIDS, severe economic hardship or conflict".

More efforts to be made

Efforts still need to be made to reach the "Millennium Development Goals" set by the UN, the United Nations, namely, a two-thirds reduction in child mortality by 2015. This will include strengthening health systems, improving the fight against diseases chronic noncommunicable diseases, pandemics or even climate change.
