My child is dyslexic, what methods to help him?

The difficulties your child may have in learning to read and then write are not all called dyslexia. It can be detected in children as young as 4 or 5 years old but it is in CE1 that the diagnosis is the easiest to make. Indeed, a child may show signs close to dyslexia in his first year of learning to read and write, but these can also be the result of a problem other than a hearing loss, visual, intellectual, a slurred speech, a lack of interest of emotional origin ...

If dyslexia is not a disease
it can be caused by a lack of laterality, a psycho-emotional disorder and a lack of attention. It may be accompanied by various concerns such as spatial or temporal orientation, motor skills, etc. A different learning method is needed.

Learning methods
offered to dyslexic children are designed to prevent the child from becoming disengaged. Teachers of theschool implement specific aids: they have the instructions read by a student, reformulate them differently, make aide-memoires, etc. Dyslexic children are often taught in lower classes so that the teacher can give them full attention. In diploma exams, students with dyslexia have the right to longer regulation time. Fortunately, teachers are familiar with this problem so that they can guide the parents of children with this disorder.

speech therapy
is one of the most common methods of rehabilitating written and oral communication disorders. If the teacher suggests the procedure, the doctor prescribes sessions that are reimbursed by the Social Security.

Semiotics
is an audio-phonatory and auditory-verbal method invented by Dr. Beller. It is also a rehabilitation system, which is done through a headset and a microphone. The child is brought back to the point before the moment when the language became significant for him in order to try to make him modify his apprehension of the language and the communication. Freed from the automatisms implemented in traditional education, the child can relearn differently.

The Tomatis method
is a method of rehabilitation of listening in order to improve understanding, so learning. It is based on the principle that the function of the ear is not limited to listening and analyzing sounds but also plays a fundamental role in balance, coordination, verticality, muscle tone and action. as a relay for any sensory information perceived by the child. The Tomatis method acts on the behavior that it modifies gradually in order to adjust it to the learning conditions of the child.

Psychomotricity
Being a study of the relationship between the body and the psyche, a review helps to identify what is the learning mechanism involved in the difficulties encountered by the dyslexic child. Psychomotorists use games and relaxation exercises adapted to gradually reduce the factors of alteration of learning.

occupational therapy
allows respond to a fine medical diagnosis and work on all the disorders that usually accompany dyslexia. The difficulties of the child are taken as a whole. Occupational therapy works on non-verbal exchange, senso-motor skills and rehabilitation of video-spatial processing. Then comes the work of rehabilitation when the grapho-motor quality has reached its peak. For example, the occupational therapist may show ancillary pathways for taking note such as computer or any other suitable tool and work in relation to teachers.

Psychology
is a technique that aims to resolve emotional disorders related to dyslexia, then considered as a manifestation of his malaise. If the child overcomes his emotional problem, the symptom of dyslexia is supposed to disappear. But psychotherapy does not exclude complementary work with a method of rehabilitation.
