Pre-conceptional examinations: is it necessary to wait to be pregnant to consult?

It's decided, you're ready to have a baby. Why not put all the chances on your side? Doing a full medical check-up as soon as the child's desire is born will allow you to start your pregnancy with confidence and to avoid unpleasant surprises during pregnancy.

The various pre-pregnancy medical examinations make it possible to detect any deficiencies or unknown diseases and to prevent family history such as diabetes or high blood pressure. A visit to your general practitioner will also allow you to take stock of your habits and lifestyle: alcohol, tobacco, weight problems, sports ... What to consider a pregnancy successful and fulfilled.

Visit to the general practitioner

Since you have a baby project with your companion, go to your GP! During this consultation, he will discuss with you several important points:

Family history: The doctor will take into account your family history and your predispositions to certain diseases. He will prescribe, if necessary, certain medical examinations to avoid any risk of diabetes, cholesterol or genetic diseases.

Vaccination: Once pregnant, you will not be able to get vaccinated! The doctor will take stock of your vaccinations, mainly mumps and measles.

Serology: The doctor will prescribe a blood test to check your serology and check that you are well immunized against rubella and toxoplasmosis. If these diseases are safe for the mother, they are nevertheless dangerous for the fetus.

The lifestyle: If you smoke or have problems with weight or alcohol, this is the perfect time to talk to your doctor. He will find a suitable solution (tabacologue, nutritionist ...) to your problem in order to avoid any risk for the pregnancy.

Visit to the gynecologist

The visit to the gynecologist is very important. Specialist in female pathologies, he is perfectly able to follow your doctor pregnancy, from the beginning to the end. During this appointment, you will be able to discuss with him all the questions concerning your ovulation cycle and the stopping and resuming of your contraception. It is also the perfect time to take stock of your serology. Your gynecologist will ask you to screen for hepatitis B and / or C and the AIDS virus, as well as a smear.

Visit to the dentist

Before getting pregnant it is essential to have a look at the dentist! Few women have this reflection, but it must be known that bacteria and microbes nestled in the mouth can be transmitted to the fetus via the bloodstream. Better to take precautions! Take courage with both hands, treat cavities and other oral infections before getting pregnant!

The opinion of Professor Dominique Luton, Head of Gynecology / Obstetrics
"People who want to have a child should put their best foot forward for the best, for example, a patient who has a history of diabetes in her family, it would be good to screen in advance if it does not. not have a diabetic field rather than assume the possible complications of diabetes that is discovered during the pregnancy. Ditto for a thyroid problem in a patient. It is always better to make a diagnosis before conception to be able to remedy it before and not to end up with a patient who develops a hypothyroidism in the course of pregnancy".
