The undersides of masterpieces

Fabienne Lebihain, who runs a Maxi-Livres bookstore in Toulouse, recommends this two-volume art book that gives us another look at the paintings of masters.

" The safe The undersides of masterpieces, composed of two volumes, was published on the occasion of the 25 years of Taschen, a great publisher of art books. Each volume presents about fifty paintings mainly from European painting, from the Middle Ages to the middle of the twentieth century.

The reader takes a historical journey and discovers each painting in its smallest details, sometimes obvious, sometimes surprising.

The technical analysis of the work is put forward: positioning of characters, backgrounds, symbolic objects, colors, plays of light.

One example among many others: The wedding of Cana of Veronese (1562-1563). We discover around Christ an abundance of characters in a setting of columns and balustrades typically rebirth. Through this famous banquet, the author chooses details that reflect the wealth of Venice of the time: sumptuous clothes, glittering jewels, abundant food, ... but also unexpected characters like the painter himself, his brother and his contemporary Titian represented as musicians.

Many other masterpieces, signed Botticelli, Bruegel, Velasquez or Renoir, reveal their secrets. A precious box to offer or to offer when you are an art lover. "
