The houses of
birth are legally and physically independent structures working in partnership with a nearby hospital. They welcome more personalized future
moms as well as their loved ones for the
delivery and the postpartum.
Each pregnant woman has her apartment which includes bath, bed, sofa ... The decoration is warm and the atmosphere relaxed. As for the medical equipment, it is discreetly hidden behind curtains. Here, the future
mum must feel like home.
The houses of
birth want to be less medicalized than a clinic and often opt for natural means such as massages or pool work during
delivery. However, if a problem occurs, the future
mum is transported to the hospital.
Where is the situation in France?
The houses of
birth, which exist in many countries such as Germany, Great Britain, the United States, Switzerland, Sweden ... are exclusively managed by midwives.
In France, there are no "real" houses of
births. Although some institutions have this name, it is often an integral part of a hospital. Hence a certain confusion in the minds.
In 2008, the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians spoke out against
birth. "
It does not seem to us to be coherent in terms of public health to close for reasons of safety establishments achieving less than 300 deliveries to open others that will do less. "
