What is the ideal time to have a child?

Fertility decreasing with age

If contraception has given women the means to choose when they want to have a child, the biological clock sets the record straight. More a woman is waiting to conceive a childthe lower its fertility. Between the ages of 25 and 35, a woman has an average of 25% chance of becoming pregnant during a menstrual cycle. The ovarian reserve diminishing, its chances of pregnancy are only 12% to 35 years old and 6% to 40 years old. Of course, these numbers are just statistics and every woman can design a child more or less easily regardless of age.

The risks of pregnancy after 40 years

Have a child at 40 is neither taboo nor exceptional today. Design a child after 40 years does not present any more risk than at a younger age if these pregnancies late are well monitored. In order to prevent age-related risks, it is important to have medical tests for hypertension, gestational diabetes, or the appearance of fibroids. Moreover, if the risk of trisomy 21 increases with the age of the future mum, screening by amniocentesis is systematically proposed from 38 years old. From the age of 40, however, women are at greater risk of miscarriage, at a lower rate of pregnancy and greater fatigue related to pregnancy.

And the ideal age of the future dad?

On the side of the future dad, men also experience a decline in fertility related to age. From the age of 24, their chance to conceive a child 2% decrease each year. Over the years, sperm quality decreases and thus reduces its fertilizing capacity. Yet, unlike women, this slow and steady fertility decline allows men to conceive a child without a real age limit.
