Migraines: what is it?

Migraine is a chronic, hereditary disease affecting twelve million French people. Women are more affected than men, especially because of their hormones. Thus, menstruation, ovulation, menopause are generally good times for headache.

The migraine often starts waking up and can last from 4 to 72 hours.

Stress is the leading cause of headaches. The other triggers are too intense physical or intellectual efforts, temperature variations, over-rich meals, fasting, excess or lack of sleep, staggered schedules, excessive odors, alcohol consumption. Chocolate, peanuts or certain types of cheese can cause some people to trigger migraines.

In some cases, migraine attacks are accompanied by what is called an "aura". These are symptoms that appear before the crisis and that suggest that it is imminent. These auras are generally characterized by visual disturbances but in rare cases, they can be speech disorders, paralysis ...

Be careful not to confuse migraine and tension headache. Migraines are only felt on one side of the head with a "pulsating" aspect, the temples beating to the rhythm of the heart, while tension headaches give the impression that the head is caught in a vice. In addition, migraine is often accompanied by nausea or vomiting that does not occur during tension headaches.
