The State Council confirms the ban on GM maize crops in France

On Wednesday, March 19th, the Council of State confirmed the decree of February 8th concerning the prohibition of the culture of the but genetically modified, judging it to comply with French law. Farmers, farmers and seed companies had seized the institution asking for the suspension of the ban. The decision of the State Council "pleased" the Greenpeace ecological organization.

At the end of the Grenelle Environment Forum and according to the "precautionary principle", the government decided last January to activate the safeguard clause on the but transgenic Monsanto 810, "until the re-evaluation by the European authorities of the marketing authorization of this GMO".

In 2007, the culture of but GMO represents 0.75% of the cultivated area but2.9 million hectares according to the general association of but. The vast majority of crops are found in southwestern France.
