Child stress: how will it manifest at home and at school?

Sylvie Sarzaud, former professor of schools and currently sophrologist in Morbihan, wrote a book "I help my child to overcome stress" (Editions Eyrolles). She agreed to answer our questions.

In children, how do these periods of stress manifest themselves?

It all depends on the stress we are dealing with and it all depends on the temperament of the child ... In general, we can say that stress has repercussions on different levels:

- at the physiological level: disturbances of the sleep and appetite, muscle tension, dysfunction of the digestive or respiratory system, skin disorders ...

- at the emotional level: an unexplained bad mood, aggression, phobias ...

- at the psychological level: permanent anxiety, bad self-perception, relationship difficulties ...

The list is far from being exhaustive. Stress is expressed in many ways depending on the individual.

A child or a stressed teenager: will these results in school suffer?

Stress, obviously, has implications for schooling. The child's attention in the classroom will be less good (especially if he has sleep), as well as his ability to memorize. He may lose his faculties when he is questioned, either orally or in writing.
The race for results can also become a source of stress ... A brilliant student, who succeeds (too much) in class, sometimes exerts on himself a pressure so strong that it exposes him to disorders. His results school will not be affected. His personal life is likely to suffer: anguish, hyperemotivity, relationship difficulties ...
