How do you ask for an adjustment ?

The timing
- First, it will not do much to ask for a salary increase at the beginning of the year if budgets and increases are made in June.

- On the other hand, meet your supervisor before the usual end-of-year interviews. Indeed, he will be more available to listen to you than if he is in full negotiation with all the employees of the box!

The preparation
- Before the meeting, make a list of your main qualities and your "best professional shots."

- If you have received emails of congratulations or thanks, do not hesitate to print them and bring them with you. Without necessarily showing them during the interview, they will be another argument to make the relevance of your request.

- Beforehand, it is also good to set the salary range that you would like to achieve, studied according to your job and the wage policy of the company. In order to know wages elsewhere, you can seek advice from unions or professional organizations. (The increase is usually between 5 and 15%).


During the interview
- Do not hesitate to bet on your years of experience or your great knowledge of the company. Show that it is precious and irreplaceable.

- Keep in mind the objectives that were set in your annual interview, and demonstrate to your leader with concrete examples that you have achieved them.

- Avoid saying "I wish to win as much as". Arm yourself with official figures and not personal resentment!

- Your tone is important: stay courteous but firm. You deserve this increase and you really care about it.

- Stay open and available for negotiations. It is common for the discussion to result in a consensus that the employer and the employee will have found through openness and discussion.

In case of refusal
- Fix with your superior a new date of meeting, in order to reassess the situation a few weeks, or months, later. It's a great way to show him your motivation and perseverance.

- Ask clearly the reason for his refusal to work so that he can not refuse your request again at the next meeting.

- Keep in mind that without an upcoming increase, you may be able to ask for something else, such as extra RTT days, training, or a change of position.
