Betting on foreign languages: with young children, which methods?

Starting to learn another language from the age of 3 is an asset. However, it is not a question of enrolling your child at any price to bilingual events. Look at the conditions for toddlers: to discover English, Spanish or German is good, but not all approaches are equal.

Playful methods

There are schools kindergartens or so-called bilingual nurseries, as well as extracurricular activities based on a foreign language. Mini-schools are part of it: "We welcome children from 3 years old for introductions to Englishsays Muriel Suel, facilitator and educational consultant. They are used to new sounds, listening to nursery rhymes, for example. We organize small games, which encourages them to use small expressions. Thus are set up automatisms."

At this age, children are made aware of another language, but they are not taught. It is necessary to avoid the structures which would propose to you a B.A.-BA school too early. On the other hand, watching DVDs during each session is also not a solution ... It is by having the opportunity to practice these new words that children will see the usefulness and retain them. Finally, ensure that the stakeholder team has a majority of native speakers.

For a few hours a week, children will not become bilingual in two or three years. This will require them to communicate in the other language much more often. However, experts note that this early learning is far from futile. The children then develop a curiosity for the language in general and its different uses.
