The importance of gynecological examinations

The annual visit to the gynecologist must make it possible to take stock of your general condition: cervical cancer screening smears and possible STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections); in general, the gynecologist also conducts palpation of your breasts to detect a possible cyst or an abnormal size.

Before proceeding with the smear, your doctor will practice a gloved vaginal touch, palpating your internal genitals and pressing on the abdomen. He will examine the ovaries and the appearance of your vulva to see if everything is normal.

Some additional examinations may be performed then if the doctor has a doubt: it can be a biopsy, there are three types:

- cervical biopsy: the doctor takes and analyzes a fragment of flesh from the cervix where a lesion is suspected;

- the biopsy of the endometrium: it is mostly practiced in postmenopausal women with abnormal vaginal bleeding following hormonal changes;

- biopsy of the vulva and vagina: performed under local anesthesia, it is mostly performed in older women more susceptible to vulvar cancer when a suspicious lesion is observed.

Different endoscopic examinations to better detect the occurrence of precancerous lesions, it is mainly colposcopy where a kind of microscope will examine precisely if suspicious lesions are present.

Radiological examination is important, it completes all other exams, especially the ultrasound which allows to visualize the ovaries well. Like the MRI which makes it possible to better observe the contours of the different ganglia.
