Physical punishment: is the time of spanking over?

According to a recent study conducted by researchers at Tulane University, Louisiana, children who are often spanked at age 3 are likely to show signs of aggression as early as age 5. In France, corporal punishment of children is not forbidden. However, we can wonder about the educational virtues of slaps and other spankings. Should we ban corporal punishment?

Exercise parental authority ... differently
Excited, the parent gives a slap or a spank to his child... and often feels guilty a few minutes later. If a spanking is not dramatic in itself, raise a child is not the "dresser". It is better to explain to him that the conflicts are solved above all by the dialogue ... By showing him the example! Establishing firm and constant boundaries is much more effective in establishing one's authority. It is thanks to these benchmarks that thechild learns how to behave in society. Impose onchild to retire to a quiet place will allow him to reflect on the scope of his actions.

The effects of corporal punishment
The adult, by making use of violence, gives a negative model to thechild. The latter may be tempted to reproduce the same scheme. Punishment may provoke angry anger that he may externalize by adopting violent behavior towards his younger brother or friends. Some children internalize anxiety, loss of self-esteem, stress and guilt.

What punishments?
Of course, it is not a question of not punishing thechild if he made a mistake. The parents may opt for the "restorative" sanction. Clean a dirty carpet, repair a broken object ... This type of punishment has the advantage of putting thechild in front of his responsibilities. The deprivations are also effective ... Provided that they do not affect the vital activities (food), nor those which allow thechild to flourish (sport ...). The parents will also be careful to adapt the punishment to the fault.
