Birth of real triplets in Germany

If you walk around Bonn in Germany and you see a mother walking a stroller with three babies looking like a drop of water, that's normal. It may be Karina P.

The 34-year-old German gave birth on 18 June to "real" triplets: three babies from the same egg. The little girls therefore have the same genetic heritage. This is extremely rare since births of monozygotic triplets occur less than one in a million pregnancies.

"At first, we had a hard time believing it: they are triplets and even identical triplets" exclaimed the mother.

Alexandra, Antonia and Adriana were born a few seconds apart, by caesarean section, five weeks before the term. They weighed between 1.70 kg and 1.96 kg and measured approximately 44 cm. The news of these births was only made public on 7 July via a press release from the Bonn Hospital Center.

Karina P. and her husband will certainly have to make some arrangements in their home since they already have two daughters: Anna 6 years old and Diana 2 years old, bringing to five the total number of children.

Nowadays, the births of twins, triplets or quadruplets have almost become "normal" because of medically assisted procreation techniques. Most of the time, babies are different since they come from several eggs and sperm. In this case, only a spermatozoon and an egg are responsible for the birth of "true" triplets.
