Around 340-345 St. Martin of Tours also named Martin the Merciful was one of the most popular saints of Christendom. Of Hungarian origin, he was first officiated by the imperial guard at Amiens before founding an abbey in Vienna and becoming bishop of Tours in 371. Thereafter the first name Martin spread to several countries as early as the sixth century. Over time, it was a little breathless until the eleventh century, before being a great success in France, England but also in Germany and the United States. Martin remains today a first name highly awarded especially in English and Scandinavian countries.
